3 Tips to Decorate a Small Apartment

Hi all,

Throughout my entire adult life I’ve lived in apartments, and for the last 4 years in NYC, I’ve lived in what most would consider a small apartment. But I’ve always made it work and more than once, I’ve been approached to feature my apartment in websites, magazines and TV. So with that I wanted to offer three tips on how to decorate a small apartment, though I imagine these tips would work on almost any apartment. Then, I’ll provide links to some of my favorite furniture pieces in my NYC apartment!

So let’s get started!

Tips to decorate a small apartment

Tip 1: Use white, lucite/acrylic furniture to give the illusion of a bigger space

I know what some of you are thinking: white furniture? But I have children/dog/cat/etc! I’m telling you you can do it! The Mr Clean Magic Eraser can do wonders, and do look for leather or faux leather when it comes to white furniture as it’ll be easier to clean. For the acrylic, never clean it with Windex or something similar. However, these pieces will give the illusion of a bigger space, as opposed to a very dark color that could make it feel bulky.

Tip 2: Use mirrors strategically.

Mirrors can make such a different when places correctly. In my NYC apartment, I purposely placed them across from an entryway to give the illusion again, of a bigger space.

Tip 3: Need more closet space? Consider a wall unit!

I’ve done this more than once. Small apartment, and in particular in NYC, normally have little to no closet space. A way of adding closer space is to put together a beautiful wall unit to showcase those items you’re proud of, or you simply wear often. I’ve done this with floating shelves, a clothing rack, sunglasses, etc.It uses the walls and gives you the space you need.

I’m linking some of my favorite items that I used in my NYC apartment here below. Please note: The couch is from Restoration Hardware, but I’m linking a similar one. The acrylic benches are sold out, so I’m linking similar ones as well.
