Psychology Behind Fashion: Adeam A/W 2019 Collection

Adeam was founded by Hanako Maeda who grew up in both Tokyo and New York City. The brand draws inspiration from the designer’s Japanese culture and New York City upbringing for an east meets west modern aesthetic that infuses art and wearability.

The Fall/Winter 2019 collection draws inspiration from the Ainu people of Hokkaido, one of the oldest tribes in Japan. Known for living in harmony with nature, the tribe dye their textiles and garments with vibrant shades derived from plants and flowers. The Ainu people also created intricate prints for their clothing that signifies spirituality and shows appreciation for the plants, flowers, and animals in their surroundings.

The appreciation for the Ainu culture is represented throughout the entire collection by way of handcrafted details, embroidery, and playing with texture in every single garment. The lace, pleating, ribbons, and ruffles provide rich tactile elements that are stimulating for the eye and elevates every single garment. Vibrant colors like turmeric, fuchsia, and turquoise blue used in the collection also draw from the Ainu tribe, as these colors can be found in the dyes used by the Ainu. Turmeric and fuchsia are mood boosting colors, whereas turquoise blue is calming, all in all these vibrant colors are a breath of fresh air for the fall and winter season. One last nod to the Ainu tribe and appreciation for animals is the incorporation of vegan leather and faux fur in the collection.

The result is a collection that is refreshing and appreciated: from the appreciation of the environment and the animals, to the artisan craft that is often overlooked in the modern age of technology. It’s a collection that is perfect for the woman that is seeking wearable, chic yet cool pieces. It’s for that eco-friendly person who appreciates a designer that draws inspiration from nature, but also preserves it in the form of vegan leather and faux fur. It’s also a collection for that happy woman who prefers mood-boosting colors and pieces that are rich in texture.
